Not long ago a disc called I Can't Explain popped into the charts, and everyone wanted to know about this new and 'different' group. Who? The Who, of course! by Nancy Lewis
Who's The Who?
* He's 5 ft. 7 in. tall. He's the only member of the group with fair hair. He has bright blue eyes that sparkle when he smiles. He smiles most of the time. . . . He was born on the first day of March, 1945, In Shepherds Bush, London. He still lives there. . . . He's happiest nowadays when he's performing with the group on stage. With time off he likes to settle back and listen to music - James Brown, Nina Simone and Buddy Guy are his usual choices. . . . When he's on the subject of music you'll hear him raving about a group that just recently arrived in London from Jamaica - The Vagabonds. He thinks they're fantastic. . . . He likes girls of all types, as long as they're easy to get on with. He often frequents small clubs in London's West End. He lives for today because tomorrow is so uncertain. . . . He's a very lively person, both on stage and off. That's a good way for a lead singer to be.
Who is this who? It's Roger Daltrey. . .
Roger: "I really love the type of life we're leading now. It's ideal for me 'cos I like to stay up very late at night and then sleep in mornings. My favourite 'bed' is on the floor honest!"
* He was born on May 9, 1945. He's the tallest of the group - 6 feet. He has dark brown hair and blue eyes. His home is in Ealing, London. . . . He sometimes appears to be rather forlorn in pictures. He's not that way at all! He's very outgoing, with loads of personality. His face lights up when he talks. He talks very rapidly. . . . He has extreme tastes. He likes either all-out mods or rockers. . . . He goes for way-out music. Jazzman Charlie Parker and Bob Dylan are his favourite artistes. . . . He used to be a student at an art school. Most of the girls there had long hair but he fell for a lass with short locks. He still prefers girls who have short hair. . . . He really goes wild on stage. He does things like smashing his guitar on the amplifier. He likes the effect this has on the sound and on the audience. It's hard on the equipment!
Who is this who? It's Peter Townshend. . . .
Peter: "My biggest thrill is playing to an appreciative audience. And you know what else I enjoy? Being mobbed! Maybe I'll get tired of it in time, but I really like it now."
* He's the "baby" of the group, born in Wembley, London, August 23, 1946. He's 5ft. 7in. tall. He has black hair and big brown eyes. . . . He'll promptly tell you that he's shy, quiet and reserved. Don't believe a word of it. He's actually just the opposite. . . . He's a real nut on the surfing sound. The Beach Boys and Jan and Dean are his favourites. He's trying to save up enough money to go to California. He wants to go surfing there. . . . He's also mad about hot rods. He's taking driving lessons now and hopes to get his license soon. Then he wants to buy an old American car and fix it up himself. . . . He's deffinately a charmer. He has a great sense of humour. He likes to have fun. He seems to be able to find a good side in any situation. . . . He's at the back when the group's on stage. But you'll never have trouble spotting him. . . . He goes wild when he's bashing away at his drums.
Who is this who? It's Keith Moon. . . .
Keith: "Oh I like all sorts of girls. especially those who have sexy faces. And don't ask me what that is. I know one when I see it, and I just can't put it into words."
* He's very good-looking. He's 5ft. 11in. tall with dark hair and blue eyes. He lives in Acton, London. That's where he was born on October 9, 1944. He's the quietest member of the group. . . . He has extreme tastes in music. He likes the James Brown type of sound and classical music - nothing imbetween. . . . He goes for all different types of girls. He's not too keen on blondes, though. He stops at about mousey brown. He's very considerate. . . . He's walking with a limp now. He's not permanently crippled though. He just rushed to answer the phone one recent morning - broke his toe on the way downstairs. He did appreciate the interest of that fan on the line, but he won't rush to the phone again. . . . He's happiest when the group is playing in big places with open stages, where he can get a good bass sound.
Who is this who? It's John Entwistle. . . .
John: "It takes a lot of concentration when we're playing. So when we get off-stage, I just like to relax and do things that don't require a lot of thinking. Guess I'm just lazy!"
